Can Fish Help Protect Your Vision?

Our vision is precious. In order to protect this primary sense, it is important to schedule an annual eye exam, wear sunglasses with UV protection, and eat foods rich in vitamins, minerals, healthy proteins, omega-3 fatty acids and lutein. Finding the right foods may be a chore, but serving fish at least once or twice a week to your family is a good place to start.

Eye Conditions of Concern

As we age, there are two common eye disorders that our ophthalmologists tests for: cataracts and macular degeneration. Both of these conditions affect different parts of the eye, have different causes, and progress in distinct patterns. One thing they both have in common is the fact that the vitamins and minerals found in certain foods, like fish, may play a role in preventing these two vision conditions.

Dietary Studies and Eye Disorders

According to Harvard Health Publishing a part of Harvard Medical School, “Some evidence shows that dietary antioxidant vitamins and minerals (A, C, and E, and the mineral zinc) may help prevent the progression of macular degeneration. These antioxidants are thought to fight free radicals and protect the retina from damage.” In addition, Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish, have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, and there is evidence to suggest that inflammation plays a role in age related macular degeneration.

Meals on round table

Studies have shown that cataracts, a clouding of the lens in the eye, can be slowed or prevented when a patient eats a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are considered “good” fats. Consumption of these healthy fats can result in stronger and healthier eyes by assisting with the flow of intraocular fluid. Therefore, the omega-3 essential fatty acids found in fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts, and canola oil can help to prevent dry eyes and possibly cataracts. Eat fish or seafood twice weekly to increase the amount of omega-3s in your diet.

Fish is becoming one of the healthier food choices for many reasons, eye health being one of them.
